Questions for Cemeteries

Last modified October 14, 2008

When selecting a gravesite marker, keep in mind that many cemeteries have regulations which must be followed for all gravestones and gravesite markers.  If you can, get a copy of the cemetery’s requirements for your own records.

Here are a few questions to ask about cemetery restrictions.

  • What type of cemetery markers and headstones are permitted? Cemeteries may allow upright headstones, but not gravesite markers.  Check to see what colors and material may be used, and whether certain types (such as double internment markers) are permitted.
  • Are flower vases allowed? Some types of cemetery headstones are available with a flower vase in bronze or granite. Make sure your cemetery allows a vase before selecting this option.
  • How small or large can the gravesite marker be? Researching the size of markers and headstones allowed will help you decide on a size to purchase.
  • What additional specifications are required? Some cemeteries impose size limitations for lawn mower proof edges.  Others mandate that a certain religion’s symbol be included. Be sure you understand all requirements before finalizing the plot and gravesite marker order.
